Writer submission guidelines:
We are looking for:
If your story is selected:
We can't pay you with money but:
- Fiction that is not currently published elsewhere (in print, web or audio) and has not won prizes in previous competitions;
- that is between 700 and 2000 words long;
- that is on-theme;
- that is submitted without a name on the document.
- The fiction must be an original, stand-alone prose story - e.g. not poetry, script or non-fiction (it's a Liars' League, after all) - and be comprehensible and complete in and of itself, even if it is an extract from a larger work or inspired by another one. Please don't submit a story focusing on characters or worlds copyrighted by other people.
- Please submit to [email protected] before the 14th March, in .rtf format. (This is universally readable, and allows us to adjust the formatting to suit the preferences of the readers.)
- Your submission email should contain the title of the story and the theme in the subject line, and your name in the body. Please don't put your name on the document because we want to judge the fiction anonymously.
- Please incorporate the theme into the centre of the story in a way that isn't superficial. Don't just have it be the name of the pub or the brand of the perfume; make it the personality of the proprietor or the way the lovers' lives go.
- If you have submitted a story to a Liar's League elsewhere and it has been rejected, don't submit it again.
- Please only submit one work.
- Submission implies permission to feature your name (or penname), the text and a video recording of your story on the website so that everyone can enjoy it; don't hesitate to contact us if there's an issue with this.
- If you'd like more guidance for what sort of stories work for Liar's League, please look at this post on the Liar's League London website.
If your story is selected:
We can't pay you with money but:
- you'll get a video recording of a reading of your work by a professional actor;
- if you're able to attend the event, you'll get a book;
- and if you can't attend the event, we'll post you a book.
